    Stone Church Artist’s Residency

    23 October 2022 / 4 Comments

And just like that our week with Stone Church Artist’s Residency program is behind us. What a gratifying and humbling week it was. I am sure neither Dale Cook or I will soon forget this experience! We really didn’t know what to expect. The Church is absolutely beautiful. Full of architectural details that amaze. The ceiling over the altar was designed to resemble a ships hull – much like the Saint John City Market. The sun backlighting the magnificent stained glass windows will stop you in your tracks with pure awe. The Soul of the Church It interesting that it was not us trying to capture the physical attributes of…

    SCA Art Chat with Helen

    30 April 2021 / No Comments

I’ll let you in on a secret Sometimes we are presented with an opportunity that pulls us out of our comfort zones. You know it will be good for you but still you resist. You can run but you can’t hide! Confession. I do not like to be photographed. Never have. I am the one with the camera. It’s the perfect way to avoid having my photo taken. Much worse is my aversion to being in a video. EGADs!! So when I was invited to participate in the Society Of Canadian Artists (SCA) Art Chat I was really happy and knew absolutely that I should participate with the interview –…

    To Santa Fe and back

    24 April 2018 / No Comments

This trip had been loosely planned for a year  I mean we all registered on the last day of PACE 17 when we hear it would be in Santa Fe.  Other than that, we waited until January to book flights and the hotel room for the trip home. And maybe just maybe, we should have really scrutinized the schedule first.  Who has time to be that planful? On the road again Two friends and i planned to meet at the airport in Albuquerque, rent a car (really really expensive) and drive to Santa Fe. I Googled the satellite maps to look at the roads to mentally prepare me for the…

Early wrap to this years challenge

    25 February 2018 / No Comments

Although this challenge is still ongoing, I am quite done for this year. I managed to complete 17 paintings since it began, but you see a surprise early arrival had me packing up my bags and flying off to Calgary!  My beautiful new grandson Henry was born a few weeks early!  And so I said to heck with the challenge and hopped on the first available flight. And I do have a few more on the easel waiting for my return. This is the fifth time that I have participated in a 30 Day Challenge.  You can see my previous efforts here. With each challenge I like  to have a…

Week 3 of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge

    19 February 2018 / No Comments

I have learned so much with this challenge.  It was not enough to commit to a painting a day – I felt the need to add a layer of complexity by adding in a medium that I feel that I am just beginning to understand.  I am an oil painter that needs to allow for dry time for glazing.  Alla prima is really maybe not my thing – but feel i have been successful with my attempt. Day 11 – Lunch on the Bar The photo does not do this painting justine.  The feathers on the bird are quire detailed.  What I am finding is that it is difficult to…

Rounded by Time and Tides While sitting on a larg Rounded by Time and Tides

While sitting on a large rock at the beach I started studying the rocks in front of me. I liked the way they seemed to nest between the two larger rocks. Reminding me of a river - a river of rocks. So I took a few photos , came home and went to the studio immediately to start this painting.

I resisted the urge to go back in to add more detail. I like the look of “soft” rocks and the pastel colours.

SQUACK SQUADRON or HUNGER BRIGADE Painting with p SQUACK SQUADRON or HUNGER BRIGADE

Painting with process stages

This painting was a bit of a set up. My friend Dale just happened to be walking along the shore behind the gulls. I just happened to be in position in the front with my camera. Knowing and hoping for a few shots of the gulls in flight.

I wanted to create a painting where the gulls look as if they are flying off the canvas. Think I’ve done that!

TURNING TIDE It was one of those hazy summer day TURNING TIDE

It was one of those hazy summer days. Gray sky. I sat on the beach completely absorbed taking it all in. The water was gently lapping on the shore. Calming and hypnotic.

Then the breeze came up and the quiet motion of lapping water transitioned into soft crashing waves. The tide was starting to turn. The waves were starting to pickup energy as the water began to retreat.

COLLECTED MEMORIES More of my treasured shell co COLLECTED MEMORIES

More of my treasured shell collection. And more things that make me happy - painting in detail is almost at the top of my list! I find when I paint with acrylics that my detail orientation really comes out!

COLLECTED TREASURES Once upon a time I would coll COLLECTED TREASURES

Once upon a time I would collect a seashell or two every time I went to the beach. I have a clear case I’d put them to proudly display and protect them. These are those shells!

Now I know we are not supposed to take shells from the beach anymore - and someday I may return them. But for now I’ll continue to treasure them and the memories they bring.

TIDAL TREASURES It’s always a happy day when I TIDAL TREASURES

It’s always a happy day when I complete a painting - especially one that I hesitated to finish. I had to figure out how I wanted to add the glaze for the water. It’s convincing when you are in front of the painting. The light caught it a bit in this photo.

I’ll get a better photo tomorrow.

Today’s location. Just before the Darlings Isl Today’s location.

Just before the Darlings Island Bridge there is an interesting pull out where people park their vehicles to go kayaking, canoeing or fishing. We were lucky today as the picnic table was available. It really makes a difference

Anyway, the day was beautiful. Warm. Hazy behind us but still blue skies over the water. I had to paint fast as my “new knee “ was acting up. And finally I had to just stop and sit. It will get better soon…right?
