    Home Away From Home

    11 February 2024 / No Comments

Travelling with paint adds another dimension as well – weight – so you have to be really discriminating as to what you pack. The other challenge is this is the shoulder season with spring creeping in on winter so you need clothes and footwear to bridge both seasons.  More weight. I had to be really selective with my art supplies. I packed up my art supplies so I’d be able to “studio” paint while visiting my daughter and her family on the West Coast. My home away from home whenever the opportunity arises. Since this is still the rainy season in Vancouver, water mixable oils and Plein Air painting are…

    And that went fast

    13 August 2023 / 5 Comments

And that went fast – Summer. What the heck happened? How is it possible you are leaving us so soon?  It seem like you were only a blur this year.  Anyone else feel this way? Oh, I know we can all be too busy – but this time of year I stop to smell the roses. Literally! I always say that is the sun is out…I’m out.  Only this year the sun was elusive, the weather was wet, often smokey and incredible humid!  And a lot of the blooms literally rotted on the bush. Yes, I know you know but I feel obligated to complain a bit more and remind…

May you live in interesting times…

    23 December 2020 / 4 Comments

My father had a quote that he used to like to say quite often and it really was both a blessing and a curse. May you live in interesting times Well, 2020 proved to be a clear reflection of the meaning of that expression. So much to be grateful for and yet so much uncertainty. 2020 clearly a year of many changes Personally I made a number of changes in my world. I made the decision to leave my day job so I could dedicate more time to painting. This was truly one of the best decisions ever. Ironically though, with this decision, came the reality of isolating away in…

Vigilance – oil painting of an osprey

    17 April 2020 / No Comments

This elegant osprey had me spellbound as we watched it fly from it’s nest, around the bay and back. Over and over. I could not get over how majestic it was sitting high in its nest, being totally observant and on guard. Vigilance! So, I had to paint it! Summer sky This was a warm summers day with not a cloud in the sky. Warm breezes blowing. We were sitting outside at a restaurant by the edge of a little bay on Prince Edward Island just savouring the day. There was a nesting platform very close to where we were sitting. I spent most of the time on my feet…

    Ducks in a Row

    10 April 2020 / No Comments

Ducks in a Row is a 1/2 sheet poured watercolour painting of Ducks Unlimited nesting boxes hung in a row Summer memories Last summer we were in Prince Edward Island in the very picture perfect area of Annandale. We rented an old farmhouse that was situated on a old farm. On the property were many sun bleached barns. While exploring the property, we came across the back of a barn with a number of Ducks Unlimited nesting boxes hanging in a row. Hence Ducks in a Row! I knew immediately there was a painting in that series of photos. Most likely a poured watercolour! Trickier than I expected I had…

DOING THE HOKEY POKEY So much fun….and this song DOING THE HOKEY POKEY

So much fun….and this song was going through my mind for most of the time I was painting it. Who can resist a dancing crow?

“ATTITUDE” He didn’t fly in. He just walked. Stra “ATTITUDE”

He didn’t fly in. He just walked. Straight towards me. I was crouched on the ground at Lily Lake trying to get some great duck reference photos. Then I felt its presence. Turned with camera ready…..

No rush. No fear. Just that steady, deliberate approach — like he already owns the ground. Probably thinking I was going to feed him.

There’s something about a crow coming straight at you. Not frantic. With intent. And all “Attitude”

“Moonlit Magic” I had a vision for this painting “Moonlit Magic”

I had a vision for this painting with a very dark background…and it worked. But only in the daytime. So I went back in and lit up the background some…and now the painting works in the evening and daytime.

I’m surprising myself at how much I’m enjoying acrylics I’ve again…mind you not the dry time. I have a mini split in my studio. Often the painting works is literally dry on my brush before I can get it on my painting. This is tough on my brushes as well. Working through my supply of surfaces in hopes of bringing it down to a reasonable stash. Called high hopes eh?

“Spring Delivery” The robins bring joy to my hear “Spring Delivery”

The robins bring joy to my heart. They are most often the first of the migratory birds to come back - giving us hope that spring really is on its way. And with that hope comes nesting season. We have had robins nest at our cottage, at our home beside our power meter, and in our climbing hydrangeas in our backyard. It is always delightful and feels like such a privilege to see.

Spring Delivery is a bit of an experiment. I started out by pouring acrylics….they were not happy to pour on this surface - but I stayed with it and it worked out. My goal was to add some depth before I started painting.

“SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT” Because sometimes you g “SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT”

Because sometimes you gotta let the world know….don’t you agree? I have an idea for a series called Midnight. I think you can see where this may go. One of my many goals for 2026 is to use up a lot of the surfaces that I have on hand. Because, you know, artists collect lots of stuff.

I think this rather handsome corvid is happy to announce that he’ll have company soon.

A bit of a product review. This is painted on a pre-gessoed cradled panel. I found the surface to be ridiculously slippery and not user friendly. You cannot layer or glaze before the previous layer is completely dry or the paint will lift off almost back to the original white. AAAAANNNNDDD…it scratches super easy. My fingernails left tracks and they were not easy to cover up. But I have many. And will use them as the finished work looks great and they are pricey (meaning higher quality I think). I have t named the brand…would only do that privately - but it’s most likely not the one you think.

“Everlasting Memories” What does one do with thei “Everlasting Memories”

What does one do with their collection of shells? Well, rather than make a wreath…I painted a wreath from my shells. It’s funny, but last year I painted a few other shell paintings. When I look at them, I see the same shells painted into this piece. I must only grab the shells near the top of the case for references.

These shells mean a lot to me. I’d collected them over many years and really do treasure them and the days I got to spend at the beach. I know we are not supposed to take shells from the beach now, but at the time it was an acceptable thing to collect.

This painting is a “Round Tuit” - meaning I’ve been planning on painting this project for many years and I finally got around to it!

Finally back at it. I have confessed many times th Finally back at it. I have confessed many times that I am a Master Procrastinator. I can’t help myself…I get quite close to completing a project and it’s like I freeze frame. I’ll walk all around the project - almost refusing to make eye contact with it! I think it’s an anticlimactic thing. When it’s done the relationship changes into a different phase. No longer building.

At this point, the work on the shells is pretty much complete. I do have to let it dry for a couple of days before I attempt the background and buts of seaweed. This is mainly because I’ve gone back in to freshen some of the colours, soften some edges and crisp up others. I don’t know where the wet paint is to keep my hands out of it.

Round tuit January comes with a fresh batch of i Round tuit

January comes with a fresh batch of inspiration and opportunities. And it’s time for me to get a round tuit! I love and appreciate when the new years starts with commissions. It sets a nice pace to start the new year feeling productive and with many goals.

I’ve already prepped the smaller panels - now it’s time to prepare this rather impressive canvas. Here’s to a wonderful New Year!

The big debate was on… Should I sent this painting The big debate was on…
Should I sent this painting to the pit to burn? Or should I try to salvage it?

Honestly, I’ve always been of the mind that there is nothing you can’t fix…you just have to want to. Oh and get over the fear of messing it up. But, I was already on the fence with this painting because…well the alien branch thing. So really, I had nothing to loose.

And now that I went back in I see the potential of staying with it. 🤞
