    Plein Air in Arizona

    1 May 2016 / 4 Comments

I have just returned from the Plein Air Conference and Expo (PACE 16) in Tucson Arizona! And what a wonderful experience it was.  I will be creating a few posts on this experience I am sure. There was so much to do and to take in.   I met up with a few friends there Jane Hagen Freeman and Marilyn Wear.  Marilyn was a prize winner – was so exciting to be there to see her win!  We attended many daily sessions for interest and to help us hone our plein air skills.   I also met up with Poppy Balser from Nova Scotia! It was so hot there that my…

    Cascading Blooms Watercolour Complete

    28 March 2016 / 2 Comments

Cascading Blooms a 1/2 sheet watercolour of pink climbing roses is now completed Procrastination I finally figured out why I have been procrastinating so much.  At least I think I have been.  And not sure I was even conscious of it until now.  Participating in the 30 paintings in 30 day challenge in January was very satisfying.  I mean I completed a painting a day for goodness sake. Felt accomplished every single day! Now that I am back to painting larger works – they seem to be taking forever.  I had a goal this weekend of finishing two.  Well, I only finished this one.  But, you know, you cannot hurry…

    Pretty Perfect Paint Prize Package

    1 March 2016 / No Comments

I am so completely excited!  And a bit dim! Look at the wonderful prize package I just received. Giddy with glee I was very fortunate and won an award at the CSPWC Open Art Show in November.  The prize was a gift certificate for Stevenson Paint – made right here in Canada. And what was so wonderful (other than receiving the award) was that I was able to select the type of painting and colours that I wanted.  Oils.  Acrylics.  Watercolours.  Smorgasbord! Delightful! Giddy with glee me! I have to admit that it took me awhile to decide what to order.  So many choices and other artist materials as well. A…

    Roses for Valentines

    14 February 2016 / No Comments

I am currently working on another painting of roses I started to think about it and realized just how many paintings of rose I have done. Being Valentine’s Day, I thought I would share some of the rose love with you .  Roses for you and for me! There are wild island roses from Prince Edward Island.  Roses from my father’s garden a long time ago. My friend Jeannie’s climbing roses that I take reference photos of every chance I get.  Apparently horse manure makes great compost for roses. Carpet roses that grew by our little pond. Past tense – a particularly hard winter did them in – so happy…

30 Day Challenge Complete for Another Year

    3 February 2016 / No Comments

This year was for the birds. In a manner of speaking.  Although if you asked me the week prior to the challenge what it would was going to look like I probably would not have suggested I would paint birds and in acrylics exclusively. Wow, I find it so difficult to believe this challenge came and went so quickly. Although I felt each and every day of January because of the commitment.  And I want to thank everyone for your continued support.  I have to admit, people asking me daily what will you be posting tonight kept just enough heat on to keep me going! Moving on We are into February…

    Miss Feya Lily Complete

    18 January 2016 / No Comments

Finally I finally managed to carve out enough time to complete this painting. It was so close.I started it well before the Holiday season and then life got in the way.  You know busy stuff.  Family stuff.  The stuff you need to take a time out for.  Only after I committed to the 30 Paintings in 30 Day Challenge for January… a good and productive way to ring in the new year.   I love the passages in this painting It may be cliché but it makes me think of generations.  The older blooms still stately with their colours fading to softer and muted tones.  The blooms that recently opened…

Week 1 – Gone to the Birds

    7 January 2016 / No Comments

I joined in another challenge to paint 30 Paintings in 30 Days.   The first week quickly became about painting chickadees!I knew the challenge was coming up so between Christmas and New Years I braved the elements to attempt to get as many photographs as possible.  I stood out on our deck for hours.  Freezing my fingers off while waiting for the perfect photo opportunity.  Interesting enough, it did not take me too long to figure out that these feathers cherubs are much faster than I.  I managed to get many empty feeder shots. And a few with the snow flying as the little cuties flew off the feeder.  …

My Process to Start a New Painting

    1 December 2015 / 2 Comments

Other than starting out with a serious dose of procrastination – there are many stages to the painting process. Mine typically goes like this: Inspiration is always first It may take on many forms. Whether it is the softness of a petal or the play of light and shadow or an intriguing detail that just speaks to you.  Something has caught your eye.  Made you stop and look at it a little deeper. Then you make a decision.  I must paint that.  In whatever way you perceive it to be.  You make so many decisions at this point, size, orientation, medium to technique.  I seldom have to look for something to…
