My Journey into Plein Air…so far

This is a Learning Journey Initially my goal was to focus on sea and sky, and in particular, skies. For years I painted with watercolours mainly because I was confident with the media.  To be fair, when I started Plein Air painting I was pretty much an accomplished studio watercolour painter.  I thought the transition to Plein Air would be easy for me. For the most part it was. Although my first attempt with water mixable oils was another story altogether. I was attempting to paint in a high altitude desert in Wyoming. I certainly didn’t know my materials and certainly was unprepared for the dry mountain air.  I created…

    Red Hot Pink poured watercolour

Red Hot Pink poured watercolour painting with process and product review I was feeling adventurous so I experimented with a few new products – one product I love and the other – not so much. In the pink It’s been a rather long, cold and wet spring. I wanted to paint something that celebrates summer heat and sunshine. Something bold and beautiful. Also I wanted to painting something that develops quicker than my oil paintings. So I turned to my photos of last summer’s planters and found red petunias! I also took this an an opportunity to push it a bit and experiment with a couple different products. Dr Ph.…

Early wrap to this years challenge

Although this challenge is still ongoing, I am quite done for this year. I managed to complete 17 paintings since it began, but you see a surprise early arrival had me packing up my bags and flying off to Calgary!  My beautiful new grandson Henry was born a few weeks early!  And so I said to heck with the challenge and hopped on the first available flight. And I do have a few more on the easel waiting for my return. This is the fifth time that I have participated in a 30 Day Challenge.  You can see my previous efforts here. With each challenge I like  to have a…

Week 3 of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge

I have learned so much with this challenge.  It was not enough to commit to a painting a day – I felt the need to add a layer of complexity by adding in a medium that I feel that I am just beginning to understand.  I am an oil painter that needs to allow for dry time for glazing.  Alla prima is really maybe not my thing – but feel i have been successful with my attempt. Day 11 – Lunch on the Bar The photo does not do this painting justine.  The feathers on the bird are quire detailed.  What I am finding is that it is difficult to…

    Sunshine and Shadows floral painting

This sunshine filled floral painting makes me happy.  It’s funny, whenever I think I am finished a painting I will often have self doubt.  That was the case with this one.  I decided to set it aside for awhile and went upstairs to start supper.  When I went back into the studio it stopped me in my tracks.  It was glowing as luminous as I had hoped it would be! The yellows so sunny and yummy.  Poured or sprayed paintings I approached this painting slightly differently by spraying the paint onto the wet surface.  I actually thought that it may be less messy. Boy, was I wrong. The coloured mist…

    Winters Light Shines Through

I have to admit this was one ambitious painting I think I may have a thing about straight lines and me not really know what to do with them.  I always thought I have a steady hand and a good eye… but am not thinking my astigmatism may not know how to deal with them.  Seeing this finished painting sure brings a smile to my face. We have a wonderful hanging stained glass window that was given to us Over the years we (really me) watch with fascination of how the right changes with each season.  Winter is particularly beautiful with the deep colour of the sky and the reflections…

    What I have learned

What I have learned while attempting to Painting 30 28 Paintings in 30 Days   Once I got over the initial fear of committing to a project of this magnitude, I made the decision to approach it with a few ground rules for myself: First – that I would not compromise on quality; and Second – that I wanted to use this challenge to explore new surfaces and mediums What I have learned: That I like to paint watercolors on larger paper 11.5 x 14, what is call ¼ sheet.  It only took one day for me to realize this size was not sustainable as it takes too long to complete a…
